How It Works

Get the certified copy. It has to come from the Idaho Bureau of Vital Records — a raised-seal copy signed by the State Registrar. A photocopy, a hospital certificate, or a notarized copy will be rejected. Idaho has no walk-in counter for vital records; order by mail ($16 a copy, 3–5 weeks) or online through VitalChek (faster, extra fees). Order two — the one that gets apostilled doesn’t come back. Here’s why.
Tell me the country. The Secretary of State asks for it on the request form, and it changes what they attach. Some countries also want a certified translation. I arrange those too, and here’s how translation with an apostille works.

Where Can I Get My Birth Certificate Apostilled Near Me?

Short answer: nowhere near you, unless you live near 4th Street in downtown Boise. The post office, your bank, the county clerk, and city hall don’t issue apostilles. For an Idaho birth or death certificate, the only place is the Idaho Secretary of State’s Notary Department, by appointment, and they hand it back by first-class mail.

That’s the gap I fill. I come to you in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Eagle, Caldwell, Kuna, Star, and the rest of the Treasure Valley, pick up the certified copy, carry it in, and bring the apostille back. If you’re out of the area, you mail it to me and I do the same thing.

Born in another state?

Idaho can only apostille Idaho documents. If your certificate is from Oregon, Utah, California, or anywhere else, it goes to that state’s office. I handle that too — same pickup, same review, same return — it just takes longer because it travels.

Do I have to send my original birth certificate?

You send a certified copy from Vital Records, and you should assume you won’t get it back — the foreign government keeps it. Don’t send the only one you have. Order two and keep one at home. The full explanation is here.

Can’t you just notarize a photocopy?

No. The Secretary of State won’t apostille a notarized photocopy of a vital record. They need the certified copy with the State Registrar’s signature on it. Here’s what a notary can and can’t certify in Idaho.

How long does a birth certificate apostille take?

Two clocks. Getting the certified copy from Vital Records: 3–5 weeks by mail, faster online. The apostille itself: my rush service is usually back in 1–3 business days; the standard mail-in route is about 30 business days. If you already have the certified copy in hand, we’re on the fast clock.

Does my birth certificate need to be translated?

Sometimes. Mexico, Spain, and most of Latin America usually want a certified Spanish translation alongside the apostille. I can arrange the translation and the apostille in one order. Here’s how the two paths work.

My certificate is from a hospital. Will that work?

No. Hospital “keepsake” certificates aren’t legal records. You need the state-issued certified copy from the Idaho Bureau of Vital Records.

What does the state charge?
