ATF Form 1 or Form 4: which one are you filing?
Both need fingerprints. The difference is what you’re doing with the item.
- Form 1 is for making one. You already own the firearm, or you’re building it, and you’re applying to turn it into an NFA item — a short-barreled rifle, for example.
- Form 4 is for buying one. A suppressor from a dealer, or any NFA item transferring from someone else to you.
Either way the ATF runs a background check, and that check needs your fingerprints. Bad prints are one of the common reasons these applications stall, so it’s worth getting them done right the first time.
What happens at an ATF appointment
- Book. Online any time, or call me.
- Have your ID ready. A current government-issued photo ID: driver’s license, state ID, passport.
- I capture your prints. Live Scan, no ink, twenty to thirty minutes.
- I check the quality before I leave. A rejected card costs you weeks.
- You get what your filing needs. Prints on FD-258 cards, an electronic file you can upload with your application, or both.
If you’re filing through a trust and several people need prints, I do the whole group in one visit.
