What I do at the table, and what I don’t

My job at a signing is narrow, on purpose.

I check each signer’s ID, and that the name on the ID matches the name on the document.
I make sure the signer is alert, understands what they’re signing, and is signing willingly.
I handle witness signatures where your document calls for them.
I give the oath for affidavits and sworn statements.

That’s the whole list. I don’t review your documents, I don’t explain what a clause means, and I don’t give legal advice. If your client asks me what a page means, I tell them to call you.

That’s your job, and I won’t create a problem for you by wandering into it.

How a signing goes

You or your paralegal call, text, or book online. Tell me who’s signing, where they are, what’s being signed, and whether you need witnesses.
Get me the documents. If it’s easier, email them and I’ll print them — letter or legal size.
I meet your client. ID check, witnesses, oath if there is one, signatures, and my notarization.
I scan the signed documents for you as part of the appointment.

Clients who can’t come to you

Some clients can’t leave the house, or they’re in a hospital bed or a care facility. I go to them, check in at the front desk, and do the signing in the room they’re in.

One thing has to be true at any bedside signing: the signer has to be able to communicate with me and sign. If they can’t, I can’t notarize it, no matter who’s asking. I’d rather you hear that from me before the appointment than at the bedside.

For clients who are out of town, remote online notarization may let them sign from wherever they are.

I quote it before I come out. It depends on where your client is and what’s being signed.

“Can’t find two witnesses” is where a lot of signings stall. Your client’s family can’t all get off work, or nobody else is around. I can bring witnesses for $60 each. Tell me when you book, and they come with me.

Do you work directly with law firms?

Yes. Attorneys and paralegals book me for their clients’ signings. Call or text, or book online, and tell me who’s signing, where, and what’s being signed.

Can you bring witnesses?

Yes. If the document needs witnesses and your client is short, I bring them for $60 each.

Will you answer my client’s questions about the documents?

No. I don’t review documents or explain what they mean, and I don’t give legal advice. If your client has a question about the content, I tell them to call you.

What family law documents do you notarize?

Divorce, child custody, and adoption papers, plus affidavits and sworn statements. For a sworn statement, I give the oath before your client signs.

What if my client is out of state?

Idaho allows remote online notarization, so a client who can use a phone or computer may be able to sign without anyone traveling.

How much does it cost?

I quote it before I come out, based on where your client is and what’s being signed. Witnesses are $60 each if I bring them.
