California Insurance License Fingerprinting in Idaho

Before you book anything with me, check one thing. If you hold an active Idaho resident insurance license, the California Department of Insurance lists Idaho among the states whose licensees don’t have to submit fingerprints for a California nonresident license. You may not need me at all.

If you do need prints, I come to you here in the Treasure Valley, capture them on my own Live Scan system, and send them electronically to our California partner company, who processes and submits them to the California DOJ.

Who still needs fingerprints for the CDI

The CDI’s exemption has limits. By its own rules, you still file fingerprints if you don’t hold an active resident license from a listed state, or if your resident license was issued before your home state started fingerprinting. Some license types have their own requirements too. If the CDI has asked you for prints, that settles it.

For nonresidents who need them, the CDI’s route is ink fingerprint cards sent to its own vendor. Mine skips the cards. I capture here, and our California partner company submits in California. I’m not a California Live Scan site, and the CDI hasn’t endorsed this option.

Where your prints are taken

I capture your fingerprints here in Idaho, and our partner company processes and submits your fingerprints to the California DOJ. The DOJ and FBI send the results to the CDI. I never see them.

So your prints are taken in Idaho, not in California. I don’t submit anything to the DOJ myself; our California partner company does that from California. But the capture still happens here. If the CDI tells you your prints have to be taken inside California, this isn’t the right option for you, and I’d rather you find that out before you pay me. Ask the CDI first.

Call, text, or book online. Tell me what the CDI asked you for.
I come to you, check your ID, and enter your details from the CDI’s form.
I capture your prints on Live Scan and check each one on screen.
Our California partner company processes and submits them to the California DOJ. The results go to the CDI.

What to bring

A valid, unexpired government photo ID
The CDI’s Request for Live Scan Service form (BCIA 8016) from your application instructions, with the department’s details on it
Your license application details, so the names and numbers match

What it costs

$349 for one applicant covers travel, capture, data entry, submission handling, and government fees up to $75.

Two or more at the same stop, like several producers at one agency, pay $299 each, and that’s everyone in the group. If your agency’s fees run past $75, you pay only the difference, and I confirm it before anything is submitted. CDI license fees are separate.

Insurance license questions

Do Idaho producers need fingerprints for a California nonresident license?

Often not. The CDI lists Idaho among the states whose active resident licensees are exempt. Check the CDI’s nonresident fingerprint page, or your application, before you book. If you’re exempt, you don’t need this appointment.

Does the CDI accept prints done this way?

The CDI decides. Its nonresident process describes ink fingerprint cards sent to its vendor. What I do is different, so if you want certainty before you book, ask the CDI.

How long do results take?

The California DOJ usually has results out in under five business days, though some take up to 10. That starts at submission, not the day you book.

What if a print is rejected?

If the capture was mine to get right, like a smudge or bad positioning, I re-capture it at no charge, and I check every print on screen before I leave. If it’s ridge quality from age, medications, or dry skin, I’ll work the capture as hard as it can be worked, but I can’t guarantee the state accepts prints the fingers can’t give.

Where do my results go?

To the CDI. Not to you, and not to me.
