Mobile Notary Services: Home, Hospital, and Office Visits

By Jim Allen, an Idaho mobile notary since 2018

Nobody plans to need a notary. A form shows up with a deadline on it, or a parent in a care facility has to sign a power of attorney this week, or the title company emails a packet at 4pm. Then the question isn’t where the nearest notary is. It’s who can get to you.

That’s what I do. I drive to you anywhere in the Treasure Valley: your kitchen table, a hospital room, a conference room, wherever the signer is. I’m one person, not a dispatch service, so the notary you book is the one who knocks on your door.

What happens at a mobile notary visit?

I show up at the time we set. I check the ID of every person signing, make sure the names match the document, and make sure each signer understands what they’re signing and is doing it willingly. Then you sign in front of me, and I complete the notarial certificate and stamp it.

A single signature is quick. A stack of estate documents or a loan packet takes longer, and I’ll give you a rough idea when you book.

Where do you meet people?

Wherever the signer is. These are the visits I do most:

  • Homes. Kitchen tables, living rooms, front porches. This is the most common booking, often an adult son or daughter arranging it for a parent who shouldn’t have to leave the house.
  • Hospitals and care facilities. Hospital rooms, rehab, assisted living, memory care, hospice, and nursing homes. A bedside appointment is a normal booking for me, not a special request. More on how those work on my hospital notary page.
  • Offices. Your workplace, your attorney’s conference room, a job site trailer. Two signers who can’t leave work at the same time is exactly what a mobile visit fixes.
  • Everywhere else. A coffee shop, a library, a parking lot on the way to the airport. I also go to jails; the facility sets the visiting rules and times, so call me first for those.

What can you notarize on a visit?

Almost any document that needs a notary. What people book me for most:

  • Powers of attorney, wills, trusts, and advance directives. I notarize estate documents at homes and bedsides, and I can bring the two witnesses a will usually needs.
  • Loan documents: refinances, purchases, seller packages, reverse mortgages, and HELOCs. See my loan signing page.
  • Affidavits, sworn statements, and jurats
  • Vehicle titles and bills of sale
  • Travel consent letters for a child traveling with one parent or without either
  • Business contracts, employment forms, and school or medical forms
  • Certified true copies of documents that allow it

If you’re a law firm with clients who need signings, I work with attorneys in the Valley and out of state. That’s on my notary for attorneys page.

How much does a mobile notary cost?

Anywhere in Ada or Canyon County, it’s $95. That covers my trip and your first notarization. Each notarization after that is $5, the most Idaho allows under Idaho Code 51-133. So a visit with two notarized signatures comes to $100.

If a document needs witnesses and you don’t have any, I can bring them for $60 each. Outside Ada and Canyon County, I quote the trip before you book, so there’s no surprise at the door. Loan signings for title and escrow companies are priced separately.

How soon can you come, and what are your hours?

Same day is normal, not an exception. When I have an open slot, I’m often at your door 20 to 30 minutes after you call.

I take appointments Monday through Friday from 8am to 8pm, and Saturday from 9am to noon. After-hours signings happen by arrangement. A 7pm appointment after everyone’s home from work is a normal booking for me.

Two things slow a visit down. One is rush-hour traffic across the Valley, and I’ll tell you if that affects your time. The other is a document that isn’t ready. If it isn’t filled out, or you’re still waiting on it from the lender or attorney, we wait until it is.

Which towns do you cover?

The whole Treasure Valley, in person:

  • Boise, including the North End, the Bench, East and West Boise, and Harris Ranch
  • Meridian, where I’m based
  • Nampa and Caldwell
  • Eagle, Star, Kuna, Middleton, and Garden City
  • Emmett and Payette, quoted before booking

Anywhere else in Idaho, or anywhere in the country, we can do it online instead. More on that below.

What do you need to have ready when I arrive?

Three things:

  1. The unsigned document. Don’t sign it before I get there. I have to watch the signature happen.
  2. A government-issued photo ID for every signer. A driver’s license, state ID card, or passport. In Idaho, one that expired no more than three years ago still works (Idaho Code 51-107). Older than that, and I can’t use it. Check it before I come.
  3. Any witnesses the document calls for, or tell me when you book and I’ll bring them.

The signer has to be able to talk with me and sign their own name. That’s true no matter who notarizes.

What can’t a notary help with?

I can’t tell you which document you need, what it should say, or whether it’s filled out right. Idaho notaries aren’t allowed to give legal advice, and I don’t draft documents. My job is identity, willingness, and a correct notarization.

So bring the document your attorney, lender, title company, or agency gave you. If you’re not sure whether it needs witnesses, ask whoever gave it to you.

What if nobody can travel?

Then we don’t meet in person. Idaho allows remote online notarization under Idaho Code 51-114A. You sign on a video call from wherever you are, and the session is recorded and kept for ten years. It works for most documents, but not for ones that need a wet-ink original. My remote online notary page explains who qualifies and how to book.

How do you book a mobile notary?

Use the online calendar. It’s open any hour and books a real, confirmed time, not a callback request. If it’s urgent, call or text (208) 826-1210 and tell me where you are and when it has to be done.

I’ve done more than 4,500 signings since 2018, and I carry errors and omissions insurance. You can read what people say in my 250+ Google reviews. Tell me where to be, and I’ll be there.
